We pay a lot of attention to grading our trekking and biking holidays as accurately as possible. It is very important that you read them carefully and assess your own ability as realistically and honestly as possible. This is to ensure that you get the maximum enjoyment out of our trips.
Grades - Trekking Holidays
Easy
Suitable for most people in good health, these trips include only a short element of trekking which is always on good paths and predominately at low altitudes. 4-5 hours of walking per day.
Moderate
Suitable for most trekkers, involving relatively short days on paths, tracks or glaciers. However, a reasonable level of fitness is required as these type of trekking holidays can involve considerable amounts of ascent and descent and the occasional difficult day. 6-8 hours of walking per day.
Demanding
Physically very challenging but suitable for regular trekkers who are used to extend days and are competent over difficult terrain. These treks may also involve lengthy periods at high altitudes. 7-8 hours of walking per day.
Challenging
Our most difficult treks, involving many long days, often in isolated areas and usually at extreme altitudes. These treks might also include difficult pass crossings, use of ropes and require basic mountaineering skills and equipment. A high level of fitness and previous trekking experience is essential. 7-9 hours of walking per day.
Grades - Biking Holidays
Easy
These tours are for those new to mountain biking or those who do not have a high level of fitness. Gentle off-road routes with no difficult technical sections. Distances of between 25-50 km per day.
Moderate
Aimed at those who are regular cyclists and have a degree of off-road mountain biking experience. Generally at low altitude and involving relatively short daily ride distances, these are also our least technically demanding trips. There are likely to be no really strenuous climbs nor steep and sustained descents. We will normally ride on a mixture of quiet roads, forestry tracks, rocky double-track and some easy single-track. A support vehicle will always be available. Suitable for bikers who enjoy occasional weekend riding on trails at home, or for more experienced bikers looking to take it easy. Distances of between 40-60 km per day.
Demanding
For those who are regular mountain bikers and have a good level of fitness. Routes with frequent moderate to difficult technical sections. These are usually longer trips, often at moderately high altitude and in remote locations, involving longer days and steeper and more sustained climbs which demand a reasonable amount of effort. More technical riding will include some fast and narrow single-track, as well as some short sections that are too tricky to ride. The support vehicle will not always be available. A good fun challenge for the regular weekend biker! Distances of between 40-80 km per day.
Challenging
For those who are regular and keen mountain bikers and have a good level of off-road biking experience. Our toughest bike holidays, involving long days, big climbs, remote locations and high altitudes. There will be technically demanding single-track ascents and descents and long sections where we will have to push or carry our bikes. These trips will provide a real sustained workout even for fit and experienced mountain bikers. The support vehicle may be unavailable throughout some days. If you are not confident in your ability, you should consider an easier trip. Distances vary from day to day, depending on topography, between 50-100 km per day.
